Honour crimes occur in many cultures that are rooted in patriarchy and misogyny. Unfortunately, this is widely prevalent across the globe. It knows no boundaries of religion, ethnicity, or language. In the West, however, honour crimes have been largely seen to be associated with religion.

Recently, honour crimes have become a very pressing and important issue for British society. This is an issue which has mostly afflicted women, predominately from certain ethnic minority and religious groups in Britain. I have chosen to explore this issue as I feel it is necessary to spread awareness about this exceptionally damaging crime.

I have explored the occurrence and reasons that honour-based abuse take place in British society. I have also examined various themes such as xenophobia, racism, political correctness, integration and cultural resistance to demonstrate the complex nature of honour crimes. My exploration is used as a basis for my solutions that I have also included in my essay.

How Adil died

This is a short audio series consisting of short audio tapes, detailing the shocking and brutal honour killing of Adil Mahmood. Although this is a fictional story, it is based on previous true honour killings that have taken place in Britain.  I made this story to raise awareness that honour killings can also affect boys and men, and there needs to be more services to help them.

(I have included a male honour crime case in my essay, please have a look at his story)
